2:00 PM
If I am Not For Myself, Who Will Be for Me? George Washington's Runaway Slave

Contact: Vernis Jackson   436-7629

Oney Judge Staines, according to the Constitution, was only three-fifths of a person. To her masters, George and Martha Washington, she was merely "the girl." All she wanted was the freedom to control her own actions, but her account of escaping the Executive Mansion in Philadelphia, fleeing north and establishing a life in New Hampshire is not a typical runaway story. Portrayed by Gwendolyn Quezaire-Presutti, Oney's tale provides an alternative perspective on the new nation's social, political and economic development, from one whose personal experience so contradicted the promise of the principles embodied in the nation's founding documents.

Location: Discover Portsmouth Ctr., 10 Middle St., Portsmouth

August 21st, 2013 - Wednesday

1:00   The Other Side of the Midnight Ride: A Visit with Rachel Revere
PM
         Contact: Samantha Simpson 516-8826
This living history program by Joan Gatturna tells a remarkable story of tea,                             trouble and revolution related by the woman who rode through life with Paul
Revere. Rachel Revere tells of the Boston Tea Party, the Midnight Ride and the
Siege of Boston. See these events through the eyes of a woman who engineered
the escape of her family from occupied Boston and smuggled money to the Sons
of Liberty. Meet the woman who kept the home fires burning while her husband
    fanned the flames of revolution!

ONLINE RESOURCES
eSTART - Online Courses for College Credit via SNHU & The Community College System of NH

eStart is a partnership between VLACS and the Community College System of New Hampshire. These are high school courses that have been designed to meet college standards. Credits earned through eStart are dual credits: high school and college. Any New Hampshire junior or senior from high school, private school, alternative school or home educated can take 100% online courses taught by CCSNH instructors. eStart follows a college calendar for registration, course schedule and finals. Tuition is just $150 per course which covers the cost of the college credit. Those credits can be used toward a degree program at CCSNH or other post secondary institutions. Course grades will be included on VLACS transcripts as well as CCSNH transcripts."

There are also a number of Southern NH University courses for $100 which are taught by adjunct instructors through VLACS.  "Students may work at their own pace as long at they complete all coursework by June 15 and are making consistent progress and remain in contact with their instructor."

Testimonials for eStart

"I have one son in college and one who will be in college this fall, and I can tell you it's a great way to either save some money down the road or just get ahead of material. A 3 credit course from SNHU though this program cost us $150. Instead of having to take a $630 elective at NHTI, my son will be to use that space in his schedule towards getting a second associate's. And if you think that your son or daughter won't attend a NH college, then having taken college level courses will look good on any college or job application."

 ~ Brighid

"Why am I sharing this?  The CCSNH courses can be cancelled if there is not enough enrollment.  Because we have had such great success with this program in our family, we'd love to see them continue to offer a wide range of courses so that we can continue to take advantage of the cheap college credit in the future with our younger children."

A&P Psychology for High School Juniors & Seniors
The purpose of AP® Psychology is to introduce students to the systematic and scientific study of the current understanding of behavior and mental processes of human beings. Over the course of the year, students are exposed to the psychological facts, principles, methodology and phenomena associated with each of the major subfields within psychology.

The central question addressed in AP Psychology is: "How do psychologists think?" The psychologist David Myers wrote that to think as a psychologist, one must learn to "restrain intuition with critical thinking, judgment with compassion, and illusion with understanding. " Whether students choose to pursue a career related to psychology or one in some entirely different field, this study is a training of the mind which will be of remarkable value in fostering a crucial understanding of how the human mind works.

This is a college-level course for high school juniors or seniors. AP is a rigorous academic program built on the commitment, passion and hard work of students and educators from secondary schools and higher education. The target of this course is to prepare students to take the Advanced Placement Psychology course administered by the College Board.
